stop changing my signs

Why is the internet suddenly abuzz today with the "news" of sidereal astrology? It's giving me a headache to hear so much blather from so many people who don't actually even care what they're talking about.

Apparently, it comes up every once in a while as a "big breaking news" piece.

I think that the only reason it's SO big this time is the fact that people who are inclined to flip out can now retweet and "Share" their unresearched findings without any more effort than it takes to play farmville.

Not that I did any research myself, but I also waited to react until someone else presented something with background :)

The end of the mayan calendar in 2012 is going to bring allllll the crazy stuff out! Just like them posting an article about magnetic north changing last week so the Tampa international airport had to close? huh??? like.. really? Common sense will be required over the next couple of years.

My FB exploded with "I now have to remove my Libra tattoo because I'm now something else!" I just wanted to beat my head against my desk. I also know some friends who are convinced the world will end in 2012 because "the Mayan calendar says so" when, in reality, it is merely the ending of one cycle and the beginning of another...you know...the way it's ALWAYS been. If we screamed "the end is near" whenever the Mayan calendar had a katun that ended, we'd have screamed so much by now that when the real apocalypse came we'd all just think it was another false end.

Exactly. I do believe that life as we know it now MUST change. WE can't keep abusing the planet the way we do. But it's not an end, it's a new beginning :)

My calendar ended on Dec 31st, so I got a new one. I had to order it though, and it only just came yesterday, so I did have a few days of frightening uncertainty.
Problem is the Mayans aren't printing theirs anymore. So I can see how if you planned your 2013 vacation based on the Mayan calendar you'd be pretty freaked out. :P

Oh, awesome. I'll be giggling the rest of the day.

hehehe.. well said! :)

I have actually been really confused until I got my new calendar. Which is the Wizard of Oz-themed this year! I'm just too cheap to buy one before the 50% off sales!
15th-Jan-2011 12:22 pm (UTC)

Ok that will be my giggle for the rest of this year.

Oh, didn't you learn Anything from Buffy/Angel??? There's a new apocalypse every week! THE Apocalypse, now that is happening every day.
Do what I do with the "new" astrology/apocalypse folks: Make popcorn, point, and laugh at the lousy scholarship reactionaries.

The only useful question that came out of any of this:

"Why do you have a Libra tattoo?"

I wouldn't tattoo a month on my body; now a planet, sure.

Best giggle of the New Year. Heee.
15th-Jan-2011 12:20 pm (UTC)
And your logic for that one?

There is no mystery behind the end of the Mayan calendar, it ended because the civilization that created it ended.

Not the race entirely, and some of the culture continued, but plague destroyed a civilization, the professionals who would have created a new epoch of calendars was gone.

Please common sense is important especially in divination. If one can not separate illusion from true sight then no tool is functionally useful.

Slow news day.
Makes me wonder what news will be quietly swept to one side, conveniently obscured by the hype this inevitably brings...
(As if...)

I think my sign is:
"Beware of intellectual--may use facts"

As for my astrological chart, it contains all twelve signs, just like everyone else.

Found this piece: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/6217548/new_zodiac_sign_dates_ophiuchus_the_pg3.html?cat=9 Made me giggle, as it points out everything people have mentioned here and a touch more.

Overall it's old news, but amusing to see people flip.

Stuff we learned as "mysteries" and "occultism" is now hitting the mainstream. Kinda like when I read books about Templars and the Holy Grail back in the 80's but it had to percolate in the collective subconscious for 20 years before Dan Brown regurgitated wrote "DaVinci Code."

Of course, I'm waiting for the story about the person who had a tattoo of zodiac sign X, read the first article, ran out and had it changed to Y, only to come back to find out that it really is X.

and it hurts to have them redone! LOL!
